Gucci Pour Homme made its debut in 2003 and includes the following list of notes in its recipe: ginger, white pepper, papyrus wood, pink bay, vetiver, orris rhizome, leather, amber and white olibanum. Yes, as you may have noticed with some surprise and even joy there is no citrus note in the opening of this articular fragrance. Instead of the ubiquitous citrus kick in the head notes you get the zest provided by a delightful ginger note that is paired with warm spice creating a heady and very interesting opening blend. Pepper in fact features throughout the fragrance’s development and blends with all the different notes providing slightly different effects. The center of Gucci for Men, however, concentrates on woods and a warm resinous cedarwood is noticable from the middle to the base. The development of this fragrance is a rather subtle affair since most notes seem thoroughly blended and so do not differentiate greatly. The opening is very distinctive as are the strong woods, but the rest seems to be a seasoning to the more dominant notes in the composition. This doesn’t hinder it at all, quite the contrary actually, it comes across smelling very refined and elegant and also quite minimal, without being sparse. As a subtle winter woody scent you could certainly do a lot worse. The lasting power is also exceptional even though the scent stays rather close to the skin
